St Joe's CYO Sports Requirements

REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL CYO ATHLETES

*The athlete must be registered in St. Joseph Parish.

* Regardless of which Church your family attends, the Archdiocese is very strict about players only signing up to play CYO Sports at the school/parish within the boundaries of their home address. There are exceptions to this rule under certain requirements and only with approval from the Region, not St. Joe's CYO.

  • ALL Athletes should be attending Mass on Sundays and Holy Days. The basis of all religious instruction is the Liturgy of the Word and of the Eucharist. Attending religious instruction is always in addition to Mass attendance.
  • Athletes do not need to be attending St Joseph School.  Students who are home schooled or who are from other schools are welcome to play CYO as long as they are continually practicing their faith. PREP classes are one way to do this, but are not required.
  • JV sports are open to 5th and 6th graders and Varsity sports are open to 7th and 8th graders.
  • Highschool basketball is open to students in 9th to 12th grade, but they cannot play for their high school team as well as CYO.
  • ALL CYO ATHLETES are required to participate in the service project for their season and attend the CYO Mass in addition to weekly Mass.

CYO Programs

As part of the St. Joseph Parish community, St. Joseph School, is an active participant in the Office of Youth and Young Adults (OYYA) of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.  St. Joseph’s CYO offers a number of athletic programs designed to both challenge our young people physically and teach important life lessons such as teamwork, discipline and sportsmanship.                                                                                                                                                                                                          The programs are open to student parishioners attending St. Joseph School, private, public or home-based schools. Players must be St Joe's parishioners. The programs are strengthened by committed and qualified volunteers. Teams are open to all interested in participating – from the beginner to the most experienced. All are encouraged to participate!

Teams and all Sports will always depend on the number of participants and coach volunteers!

St Joseph CYO

CYO Sports is one component of the parish’s comprehensive youth ministry program which enables the partnership of parents, coaches, priests, religious, teachers, and adult leaders to manage and support a sports program that allows youth to grow in their relationship with God and come to better understand themselves and the Catholic Faith.

The St. Joseph Catholic Youth Organization is a school-based program which provides opportunities for youth to grow in faith and understanding of their church through involvement of athletic endeavors. Through a total youth ministry concept incorporating intellectual, physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of the student, the program strives to enhance the total Christian education experience.

Through the management by highly motivated, volunteer, adult leaders, students achieve life-long Christian characteristics of leadership, team play, self-motivation, determination, integrity, and dealing graciously in both victory and defeat. This is achieved through competition with other schools within the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO), for grades fifth through eighth, in structured, supervised sporting events enabling maximum individual and team potential.

Our mission is to:

  • Employ healthy and enjoyable competition to promote the sharing of gospel values among athletes, parents and coaches.
  • Assist parish leadership in nourishing the emotional, spiritual, social, and physical needs of young people.
  • Encourage young people to appreciate the gifts that they possess, and challenges them to share these gifts with their community.
  • Allow youth to witness the life of Christian Discipleship in their coaches and adult leaders.
  • Encourage youth to become responsible members of their faith community.

In keeping with the CYO Mission, each participant is encouraged to donate their time to service projects and to attend a team mass each session.
